Why This Matters

Have you ever asked a question that grown-ups could not answer? Why is the sky blue? How does a bird stay up in the air? What is inside a drop of pond water? That little itch in your mind has a name. It is called curiosity.

Curiosity feels small. But it is the engine behind all of science. Every machine, every medicine, every rocket began with one person who looked at something ordinary and asked, “Why is that so? What if I tried this?”

This unit is called “Science and Curiosity”, and it is the last unit of your Poorvi reader. It brings you three very different stories of curiosity at work. One is about a pet bird in outer space that quietly saves a whole crew. One is a poem about a magnifying glass that turns tiny things into wonders. One is the true life of a brave Indian scientist, Bibha Chowdhuri, who studied the stars when almost no Indian woman was allowed to.

A bird, a lens, and a scientist. What do they share? Each one shows us that paying close attention — and asking “why?” — can do something amazing. Let us see how.

The Big Idea

Curiosity is the heart of science. Looking closely at the world — and asking “why?” — is not a waste of time. It is how we discover, how we stay safe, and how we change the world. A curious bird can warn us of danger. A simple lens can reveal hidden beauty. And a curious mind that refuses to give up can break barriers no one thought could move.

The Story — “Feathered Friend”

This story was written by Arthur C. Clarke, one of the most famous science-fiction writers in the world. Science fiction means a made-up story built on real science ideas. This one is set on a space station floating high above the Earth. Let us walk through it slowly.

What happens

A space worker named Sven Olsen was a thin but strong little man. On the space station, being light was useful, so small workers like him were valued. Sven was very good at a tricky job: catching steel beams as they floated about with no weight, guiding them into place, and joining them together. Down on Earth, gravity pulls beams down. Up in space, everything floats — so the work was like a slow, careful dance in the air.

One day Sven did something against the rules, just out of curiosity. On his way back from a holiday on Earth, he secretly carried up a pet — a small yellow canary named Claribel. He wanted to see, with his own eyes, how a bird would fly when it had no weight at all but could still use its wings.

The narrator (the person telling the story, another crew member) first met Claribel by surprise. He heard a sweet whistle near his ear. He thought it was the station’s loudspeaker. But when he looked up, he saw a little bird hanging in the air, perfectly still, with her wings folded. Then she did a clever backward loop that no bird on Earth could do, and floated away. She had already learned how to fly in zero gravity.

Soon everyone loved Claribel. The crew hid her whenever important visitors came from Earth. A space station has many hiding places. There were a few narrow escapes — but who would ever look for a canary in space?

Then came the frightening morning. The narrator woke up with a headache, feeling slow and dull. At breakfast, one seat was empty. Sven came in looking shaken. In his open hand lay Claribel — a tiny bundle of yellow feathers, with her claws curled up. She seemed dead. The cook, who also acted as doctor, listened for her heartbeat but could not be sure.

Someone suggested giving her oxygen. They tucked Claribel into a face mask full of oxygen, and she revived at once. She hopped up, sang her little song — and then fainted again.

For the last few minutes, something had been tugging at the narrator’s tired memory. Suddenly it all became clear. He turned to the duty engineer and said urgently that something was wrong with the air — that was why Claribel kept passing out. He remembered that long ago, miners carried canaries down into mines to warn them of poisonous gas.

The engineer said the alarms would have warned them. But his assistant quietly admitted that the second, back-up alarm was not connected up yet. The engineer rushed off — and came back looking embarrassed. There had been a rare moment when the Earth’s shadow blocked the Sun. Part of the air purifier had frozen up, and the single alarm had failed to go off. Half a million dollars of clever machinery had let them down. Without one little bird, the whole crew would soon have been dead.

Who is in the story

There is no long list of characters. The story works with just a few people and one little bird, which keeps it tight and clear.

  • The narrator — an unnamed crew member who tells the story. He is calm and a little funny. He is the one who finally connects the bird’s fainting to the bad air.
  • Sven Olsen — the curious worker who smuggled the bird up. His curiosity is what saves everyone in the end.
  • Claribel — the yellow canary. She is the real hero, though she never knows it.
  • Jim, the engineer (and his assistant) — in charge of the station’s machines. Jim is so sure of his equipment that he almost ignores the warning.

The ‘why’ — how a tiny bird becomes a life-saving alarm

This is the most important idea in the whole story, and the book does not stop to explain it. Let us close that gap.

Why does a small bird faint from bad air before a strong grown human does? It seems backwards. You might think a big strong person would be safer than a tiny bird.

The reason is about size and oxygen need. A small animal has a very fast heartbeat and breathes quickly. For its tiny body weight, it burns through a lot of oxygen. So when the oxygen in the air starts to drop, the little bird feels it almost at once. A big human body has more reserve and reacts much more slowly. So the bird “runs low” first — and shows it by fainting.

That is exactly why this works as a warning. The bird passes out while the humans only feel a little dull and sleepy. If they notice the bird in time, they still have a few minutes to act and save themselves. Figure 5.3 below lays out this chain of cause and effect, step by step.

The deeper messages — curiosity, humour, and the limits of machines

Now look past the plot at the ideas the story is really about.

The first is curiosity. Sven kept the bird for no useful reason — just because he was curious about how it would fly in space. That same curiosity ends up saving everyone. The story quietly tells us that wonder is not silly. Sometimes it leads to things far more important than we expect.

The second is the limits of machines. The crew trusted half a million dollars of equipment. But the back-up alarm was not connected, and the main one froze. The expensive machine failed, while a tiny living bird did its job perfectly. The story is not against science — Arthur C. Clarke loved science. But it gently reminds us that nature and living things still matter, and that we should never depend on machines alone.

The third is humour. This is a tense, life-or-death story, yet it is told with a light, smiling voice. The narrator jokes about his tiny “office”, about hiding the bird from visitors, and ends with the cheerful idea that visitors to space stations may now hear a happy bird-song meaning they are “doubly safe”. This mix of real danger and gentle humour is what makes the story so enjoyable.

The Poem — “Magnifying Glass”

The unit’s poem is called “Magnifying Glass”, written by Walter de la Mare. A magnifying glass is a round lens that makes small things look big. The poem is all about the wonder this simple tool can show us.

What the poem says

The speaker holds up the round glass and says it can “make Magic talk”. Through the lens, ordinary tiny things turn into something amazing.

  • A small scrap of chalk shows a whole crowd of tiny shells inside it.
  • An inch of moss looks like a forest, full of flowers and trees.
  • A drop of water seems like a busy hive of bees.

Then the speaker watches a spider at work. Up close, the lens shows how the spider shoots out its web-silk from tiny parts of its body called spinnerets. The speaker sees the spider’s sharp claws and feels sorry for the silly flies that stumble into its net.

The speaker says that nothing is too small for the glass to make more marvellous. And in the last lines, looking at the moon through such lenses, it feels as if you could almost walk there in an afternoon.

Who is speaking, and the feeling of the poem

The speaker is someone full of childlike wonder and curiosity — perhaps the poet himself. The speaker is not bored or grand. He is delighted and amazed by small things. The mood of the whole poem is one of joy and surprise. You can almost feel the speaker leaning in, eyes wide, saying “look at this!”

The poem is built from short verses of four lines each. A four-line verse is called a quatrain. This neat, repeating shape suits the poem, because each verse takes one ordinary thing and reveals its hidden wonder.

The ‘why’ — how the lens turns the ordinary into the marvellous

Here the science and the poetry meet. Let us answer the “why” the poem leaves unsaid: how does a magnifying glass actually make tiny things look big?

A magnifying glass is a convex lens — a piece of glass that is thicker in the middle than at the edges. When light from a small object passes through it, the lens bends the rays of light. Your eye then receives these spread-out rays. Your brain follows them backwards in straight lines and “sees” a much bigger image than the real object. The object has not really grown. The lens has simply spread out the light so your eye sees it larger. Figure 5.4 below shows how this happens, and the wonders the poem reveals.

So the poem’s central idea is really a scientific one dressed in beautiful words: close observation reveals a hidden world. The ordinary things we ignore — moss, chalk, a drop of water — are full of detail and wonder, if only we look closely enough. The poet uses the lens as a symbol for curiosity itself: the habit of really looking.

The poet also uses clever picture-language. He compares a drop of water to a hive of bees and an inch of moss to a forest. A comparison using “like” or “as” is called a simile. When he says the glass can “make Magic talk”, he gives the glass a human power — speaking — which is called personification. These devices make the small things feel alive and grand.

The True Story — “Bibha Chowdhuri”

The last reading is a true-life story, a kind of short biography. It tells the life of Bibha Chowdhuri, who is remembered as India’s first woman physicist. A physicist is a scientist who studies matter, energy, light, and the basic rules of the universe.

What her life was like

Bibha Chowdhuri was born in Kolkata in 1913, in an India where most women were not allowed to study much, let alone do science. Yet she pushed forward. Her determination earned her a place at the Bose Institute. She became the first Indian woman to work in high-energy particle physics — the study of the tiniest pieces that everything is made of.

In 1945 she went to the University of Manchester in England. There she worked under a famous Nobel Prize winner and studied cosmic rays — invisible streams of high-energy particles that come from outer space and rain down on the Earth all the time. A newspaper called her “India’s New Woman Scientist — She has an eye for Cosmic Rays”. Her most important work was helping in the discovery of a tiny particle called the pi-meson.

In 1950, the great scientist Erwin Schrödinger nominated her for a Nobel Prize. She did not win, but the nomination shows how respected her work was. When she returned to India in 1949, Homi Bhabha personally chose her to be the first woman scientist at TIFR (the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research). She worked quietly all her life, often in the shadows of her famous male colleagues, and received almost no awards while she lived. She passed away in 1991, her story mostly forgotten.

But the stars do not stay hidden forever. In 2019, the International Astronomical Union honoured her by naming a star “Bibha” — a word that means “beam of light”. In 2020, the Indian government created a special professor’s chair in her name. Today, women lead missions at ISRO, including Chandrayaan-3, and they stand on the shoulders of pioneers like Bibha Chowdhuri.

The ‘why’ behind the writing — why tell this story now?

Ask yourself: why did the writer dig up the story of a scientist almost everyone had forgotten? Why does it matter today?

The answer is the heart of the piece. Bibha Chowdhuri was brilliant, yet she stayed in the shadows mostly because she was a woman in a time that did not expect women to do science. The writer wants us to see two things at once. First, an injustice: a great scientist was overlooked for decades. Second, a hope: things have changed, and women now lead India’s biggest space missions. By telling her story, the writer honours her and inspires young readers — especially girls — to believe that they too can do science.

The writer uses one image again and again: light. Bibha is called a “beam of light” and a “beacon”. This is fitting in two ways. She studied light from space (cosmic rays), and her life lit a path for the women who came after her. The star named “Bibha” makes this beautiful: a woman who studied the heavens has now become a star in the heavens herself.

At first a space-station canary, a magnifying glass, and a forgotten scientist seem to have nothing in common. But the unit places them together for a clear reason. Each one is a story of curiosity and close looking.
