Why This Matters

Think about your last meal. Maybe it was rice and dal. Maybe roti with some vegetables. Maybe a samosa from the corner shop.

Now ask a simple question. Where did all of that come from?

The rice grew in a flooded field somewhere. The wheat for your roti waved in golden fields, perhaps in Punjab. The dal came from a pulse crop. The oil in the samosa came from oilseeds like mustard. Even the cotton in the shirt you are wearing grew on a plant in a field.

Someone grew every bit of it. That someone is a farmer. (A farmer is a person who grows crops and raises animals on land.) Almost half of all working people in India are farmers or work in farming. They feed more than 1.4 billion people, every single day.

Farming is one of the oldest things humans have ever done. People in India have been farming this land for thousands of years. Over all that time, they learned which crops grow where, in which season, and how to care for the soil.

In this chapter, you will learn the story of Indian farming — how it began, how it changed, and the clever ways farmers grow our food. By the end, you will never look at a plate of food the same way again.

The Big Idea

Farming, also called agriculture, means growing crops and raising animals on land for food and other useful things. In India, farming is deeply tied to the land, the climate, the soil, and water — especially the monsoon rains. Indian farmers follow the rhythm of the seasons, growing different crops at different times of the year. Over centuries they built up a huge store of wisdom about the land. Today they mix this old, traditional wisdom with new, modern tools and science. The big challenge now is to grow enough food for everyone while keeping the soil and water healthy for the future. That careful balance is called sustainable farming.

Let’s Break It Down

We will go step by step. First we will see how farming began long ago. Then we will look at the kinds of crops, the seasons, the methods, why farmers matter so much, and the troubles they face today.

How farming began and changed in India

Long, long ago, humans did not grow food. They wandered around and gathered wild plants and hunted animals. Then, slowly, they learned a magical skill — they learned to plant seeds and grow their own food. This changed everything. People could now settle in one place. Villages grew. Towns grew. Whole civilisations grew. Farming is the reason we live the way we do.

In India, this story is very old. People found grains of rice in the Ganga Plain from about 9,000 years ago. At a place called Mehrgarh (in the Indus region), people grew barley and millets about 7,000 years ago. Later, the Harappans — the people of the great cities of the Indus-Sarasvati civilisation — grew wheat, barley, and rice.

Over time, farmers learned to grow more and more kinds of plants: oilseeds like sesame and mustard, pulses like green gram and black gram, fibre crops like cotton and jute, and many fruits and vegetables. They also tamed animals — cattle, goats, sheep, and others — to help with farming and to give milk, manure, and more.

Our ancestors were very clever about farming. Old Indian books, such as Kautilya’s Arthashastra and Surapala’s Vrikshayurveda, are full of advice on how to prepare seeds, water plants, and care for the soil. Some of their ideas are still used today.

Here is one surprising example. At a Harappan site called Kalibangan, farmers used intercropping about 4,800 years ago. (Intercropping means growing two or more different crops in the same field at the same time — like sugarcane together with pumpkin.) Amazingly, farmers in the same area were still doing exactly this in the 1960s. The wisdom passed down across nearly five thousand years.

Before we go on, let us be sure we understand what the word “agriculture” really covers.

One more thing to fix in your mind. When you hear the word “farmer”, what do you picture? Many people picture a man. But in rural India, more than three out of four people working in farming are women. They do most of the work — from sowing the seeds to harvesting and threshing the grain. (Threshing means separating the eatable grain from the dry stalk or husk.)

Food crops and cash crops

Not all crops are grown for the same reason. We can sort them into two big groups based on why the farmer grows them.

The first group is food crops. These are grown mainly so that people can eat them. Rice, wheat, maize, bajra (pearl millet), jowar (sorghum), and pulses like gram and dal are all food crops. They fill our plates and keep us alive.

The second group is cash crops. The word “cash” means money. These are grown mainly to sell for money, not to eat directly. Cotton, sugarcane, jute, tea, coffee, and oilseeds like mustard are cash crops. A farmer sells them, and factories turn them into useful things — cotton into cloth, sugarcane into sugar, jute into bags.

Figure 1.1 below puts the two groups side by side, so you can see them clearly.

Notice the small note in Figure 1.1. The two groups are not a strict wall. Sugarcane is sold for money (so it is a cash crop), but it also gives us sugar to eat. The name tells you the main reason the crop is grown, not the only use.

But here is the deeper question. Why don’t all farmers just grow the same crops everywhere? Why does Punjab grow wheat while Kerala grows rice?

The answer is that crops are picky. Each crop needs the right climate (heat and rain), the right soil, and the right amount of water. Punjab has fertile flat plains and cooler winters that wheat loves. Kerala is hot and wet, which rice loves. A farmer grows what the land and weather around them allow. That is why the food on your plate is really a story about the place it came from.

The rhythm of seasons: kharif, rabi, and zaid

Indian farmers do not grow everything all year round. They follow a steady rhythm of seasons. India has three main cropping seasons: kharif, rabi, and zaid. (These names came from Arabic and have been used since Mughal times.) Following this rhythm means food keeps coming all through the year.

To understand the seasons, we first need to understand why they exist — and that comes down to the monsoon.

Now the three seasons make sense. Let us walk through them.

  • Kharif crops are sown in June–July, when the southwest monsoon arrives. They grow through the hot, wet months and are harvested around September–October. They need a lot of water and warmth. Examples: rice, maize, jowar, bajra, cotton, and groundnut.
  • Rabi crops are sown in October–November, in the cool, dry weather. They grow through winter and are harvested around March–April. They need cooler weather and less water. Examples: wheat, barley, peas, gram, and mustard.
  • Zaid crops are short crops grown in the brief summer season, between rabi and kharif. Examples: watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber, and pumpkin — the juicy fruits of summer.

Figure 1.2 lays these three seasons out on a calendar of the whole year, so you can see when each one is sown and harvested.

A simple way to remember it: as Figure 1.2 shows, kharif rides the rains (wet and hot, June onwards), while rabi grows in the cool dry winter (sown after the rains, harvested in spring).

Each season has its own worries. Kharif crops depend on the monsoon arriving on time. If the rains come late, the crop suffers. And if there is too much rain, the crop can be destroyed by floods. This brings real hardship to farmers and their families.

Let us make sure you can tell a kharif crop from a rabi crop in a real situation.

Worked example

A farmer in Haryana sows wheat in November. Her neighbour sows rice in July. Which crop is kharif and which is rabi? In which months will each one be harvested?

From the farm to your plate: the farming cycle

How does a bare field turn into food on your plate? Farming follows a clear set of steps, in order. We call it the farming cycle, because once it ends, the farmer starts it again for the next season.

The four big steps are:

  1. Ploughing — the farmer turns over the top soil to make it soft and loose. (Soft soil lets seeds push roots down easily and lets water and air reach them.)
  2. Sowing — the farmer puts seeds into the soft soil.
  3. Irrigation — the farmer gives the growing crop water, so it can grow tall and healthy.
  4. Harvesting — when the crop is ripe, the farmer cuts it and collects the grain.

Figure 1.3 below shows these four steps as a loop.

As Figure 1.3 shows, after harvesting the farmer ploughs again and the cycle begins anew. This is why farming is a year-round job that never really stops.

Now let us look more closely at one step that often decides whether a crop lives or dies: water.

Watering the crop: rain-fed and irrigated farming

No crop can grow without water. So how a farmer gets water to the field is a huge deal. There are two main ways.

The first is rain-fed farming. This means the crop depends only on rainfall — no extra water is added. It works fine in places that get good monsoon rain. But it is risky. If the monsoon fails, the crop fails. A drought (a long time with too little rain) can wipe it out.

The second is irrigated farming. Irrigation means giving water to crops using human-made methods — not just waiting for rain. Farmers bring water from rivers, canals, ponds, wells, and groundwater (water stored under the ground). Irrigation lets farmers grow crops even when there is little rain. It makes the food supply far more steady.

India has a very long history of irrigation. Even in the Indus civilisation, people built water structures. About 1,800 years ago, a king named Karikala built the Kallanai dam across the Kaveri River — a huge structure that still waters thousands of hectares of land today. Communities also built clever local systems, like the phad system in Maharashtra (small canals that carry river water to fields) and bamboo drip irrigation in the Northeast (bamboo pipes that carry spring water to fields).

Modern times brought new irrigation methods that save water. Two important ones are:

  • Drip irrigation — water drips slowly through tiny holes in pipes, straight to the roots of each plant. Almost no water is wasted.
  • Sprinkler irrigation — water is sprayed into the air and falls on the crop like artificial rain.

Why does saving water matter so much? Because in many parts of India, groundwater is running out fast. We are pumping water from under the ground faster than the rains can refill it. Drip and sprinkler methods help us use every drop wisely. This is not a small thing — it is one of the biggest farming problems India faces.

Two ways of farming: traditional and modern

Over the centuries, Indian farmers built up two big styles of farming. Many farmers today actually mix the two.

Traditional farming is the old way, passed down over generations. It works closely with nature. Farmers use bullocks (strong oxen) to pull the plough, cow dung as natural manure to feed the soil, and seeds saved from their own last harvest. They rely on rain or simple irrigation. A good example is terrace farming — cutting flat steps into a hillside so crops can grow on slopes without the soil washing away. Traditional farming is gentle on the land and lasts a long time. But it usually gives smaller harvests, and the work is slow and hard.

Modern farming is the new way, using science and machines. Farmers use tractors and harvesters instead of bullocks, chemical fertilisers and pesticides to boost growth and kill pests, bought high-yielding seeds that give bigger harvests, and pumps and drip systems for water. Modern farming gives much bigger, faster harvests. But it can harm the soil and water over time if used carelessly.

A big turning point in modern farming was the Green Revolution in the 1960s and 1970s. (A “revolution” here means a huge, fast change.) Scientists like M.S. Swaminathan helped bring in:

  • high-yielding varieties (HYV) of seeds — special seeds that grow much more grain,
  • more irrigation,
  • chemical fertilisers and pesticides, and
  • machines like tractors and harvesters.

The result was dramatic. India’s production of wheat and rice shot up. The country, which once struggled to feed itself, became self-sufficient in food — it could grow enough to feed its own people. This is why farming came to be called the “backbone of the Indian economy”.

But the Green Revolution also had a hidden cost. After a few decades, the problems showed up: the soil grew poorer, groundwater dropped, and the heavy chemicals polluted the soil and water and harmed the health of people and animals. So a method that solved one big problem slowly created new ones. This is exactly why people now talk about sustainable farming — which is our next topic.

Why farmers are so important

It is easy to forget farmers. We see neat food in shops and never think about the field it came from. But stop and think about how much depends on the farmer.

Figure 1.5 below shows the farmer at the centre of a web, with arrows pointing to everything farming gives the country.

So the next time you eat, remember: a farmer woke up early, worked in the sun, and trusted the rains, so that you could be fed. Without farmers, there is no food, no cloth, no sugar — nothing.

Challenges farmers face, and the path to sustainable farming

Farming may be vital, but it is also very hard. Indian farmers face some serious challenges today.

  • Small landholdings. A “landholding” is the piece of land a farmer owns. As land passes down through families, it gets split among children, again and again, until each share is tiny. The average landholding is now only about three-fourths of a hectare — about the size of a football field. (A hectare is a unit of area equal to 10,000 square metres.) A tiny farm earns very little, and big machines like tractors do not fit or pay off on it.
  • Climate change. The weather is becoming harder to predict. Rains come at the wrong time. Droughts and heavy floods strike more often. This badly damages crops and can ruin a whole season.
  • The debt trap. When a crop fails, a farmer may take a loan to survive. If the next crop also fails, they cannot repay it. They borrow more, fall deeper into debt, and sometimes are forced to give up farming altogether. This is a painful and serious problem.

So how do we keep farming strong without wrecking the land? The answer is sustainable farming. (“Sustainable” means something that can keep going for a very long time without using up or spoiling what it needs.) The idea is to take the best of modern science and join it with the best of old, traditional wisdom.

Figure 1.6 below shows what sustainable farming looks like in practice.

As Figure 1.6 shows, sustainable farming uses ideas like:

  • Organic farming — growing food without chemical fertilisers and pesticides, using natural things like compost, cow dung, and seed cake instead. (Compost is rotted plant and animal waste that feeds the soil.)
  • Neem-based pest control — using natural sprays made from neem to keep pests away, instead of harmful chemicals.
  • Crop rotation — growing different crops in the same field in different seasons, so the soil does not lose the same nutrients every time.
  • Saving water — using drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting so precious water is not wasted.

There is a real example to be proud of. The state of Sikkim banned chemical fertilisers and pesticides in 2014 and switched fully to natural farming. It became the world’s first fully organic state. The government also helps farmers — by giving them seeds, weather information, cheaper electricity for irrigation, crop insurance (like the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana), and by buying important crops at fair prices.

The big challenge of our time is this: use modern tools to grow enough food for everyone, while caring for the soil and water the way our ancestors did. Get that balance right, and Indian farming can flourish for generations to come.
