Why This Matters

In 1984, an Indian named Rakesh Sharma became the first Indian to fly into space. From up there, he looked down at our country.

The Prime Minister at the time, Indira Gandhi, asked him a question on the radio. “How does India look from space?” she said.

He answered, “Sare jahan se achchha” — better than the whole world.

What did he see that made him say that? He saw a land full of variety. In one single country, there are snowy mountains so tall they almost touch the sky. There are flat green plains where farmers grow food for millions of people. There is a hot golden desert. There is a high flat tableland in the middle. And there are long sandy coasts and tiny islands sitting in the blue sea.

This variety is special. Few countries in the world have so many different kinds of land in one place. And here is the important part: this land does not just look beautiful. It decides how people live. It decides where farms grow, where cities are big, what people eat, what clothes they wear, and even what festivals they celebrate.

In this chapter, we will take a journey across India — from the mountains in the north to the islands in the south. By the end, you will understand not just what India looks like, but why the land shapes our lives the way it does.

The Big Idea

India is a land of many different shapes of land, called physical divisions. There are six main ones: the Himalayas (high mountains in the north), the Northern Plains (flat, fertile land just below them), the Peninsular Plateau (a raised, flat tableland in the middle and south), the Thar Desert (a dry, sandy region in the west), the Coastal Plains (narrow strips of flat land along the sea), and the Islands (small bits of land out in the sea). Each kind of land gives people something different — water, soil, minerals, fish — and also makes some things hard. So the shape of the land quietly decides how, and where, people live.

Let’s Break It Down

We will go slowly, one region at a time. First, let us understand what “geographical diversity” even means. Then we will travel across India and meet each region. Along the way, we will keep asking the most important question: why does this land shape life the way it does?

What “geographical diversity” means

Let us take the two words apart.

Geographical means “to do with the land and the natural features of a place” — the mountains, rivers, deserts, plains and seas. (Think of all the things you would see if you looked at a place from above.)

Diversity means “lots of different kinds.” (Your class has diversity — students of different heights, with different hobbies, who speak different languages at home.)

So geographical diversity simply means many different kinds of land in one place. India has tall mountains and flat plains and a desert and a plateau and coasts and islands — all inside the borders of one country. That is a lot of variety.

Before we travel, let us place India on the world map.

India is the seventh-largest country in the world. It is a part of the continent of Asia. Together with its neighbours — Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Myanmar — it forms a region called the Indian Subcontinent. (A subcontinent is a large piece of a continent that stands a little apart from the rest. India is part of Asia, but the giant Himalayan mountains and the seas cut it off, so it feels like its own little world.)

Look at the boundaries that nature has drawn around India:

  • In the north, the tall Himalayan mountains stand like a giant wall.
  • In the west, the Thar Desert and the Arabian Sea.
  • In the south, the Indian Ocean.
  • In the east, the Bay of Bengal.

These natural walls — mountains, deserts and seas — have kept India a little separate from the rest of Asia. That separation helped India grow its own special climate, culture and history.

To see all the regions together, look at Figure 1.1. It is a simple, stylised map. (Stylised means drawn in a simple way to make the idea clear, not a perfect real map.) Each colour is a different physical division.

Now let us begin our journey at the top of India — the mighty Himalayas.

The Himalayas (northern mountains)

Look at the blue band across the top of Figure 1.1. That is the Himalayas. They run across the north of India like a massive wall, stretching about 2500 kilometres from one side to the other.

The name itself tells you what they are. Himalaya comes from two old Sanskrit words: hima, meaning “snow”, and alaya, meaning “home”. So Himalaya means “the home of snow”. And it is — many of its peaks are covered in snow all year.

These are the tallest mountains in the world. Many peaks rise over 8000 metres high. The very highest mountain on Earth, Mount Everest, is in this range. (8000 metres is so high that the air up there is too thin to breathe easily.)

How did such giant mountains come to be? It is a wonderful story, and it explains why the Himalayas are so tall.

A very, very long time ago, the land we call India was not where it is now. It was part of a bigger landmass far to the south, near Africa. Slowly — over millions of years — this Indian land drifted north. About 50 million years ago, it bumped into the huge landmass of Asia.

When India pushed against Asia, the land caught in between had nowhere to go. So it crumpled and folded upward — exactly like a carpet wrinkles into folds when you push it across the floor. Those folds of crumpled land are the Himalayas. Figure 1.2 shows this step by step.

The Himalayas do an important job for the rest of India. In summer, the snow on the peaks melts. That melted snow flows down and feeds three great rivers — the Ganga, the Indus and the Brahmaputra. These rivers give water for drinking and farming to hundreds of millions of people. That is why the Himalayas are sometimes called the “Water Tower of Asia” — like a giant tank that stores water as snow and lets it out slowly through rivers.

Life in the mountains is divided by height. Higher up, it is colder and harder to live. So the Himalayas have three levels:

  • The Greater Himalayas (Himadri) are the highest part, snow-covered all year, with peaks like Everest and Kanchenjunga. Life here is very tough, so few people live here.
  • The Lower Himalayas (Himachal) lie below them and are gentler and warmer. Famous hill stations like Shimla, Nainital, Darjeeling and Mussoorie are here.
  • The Shivalik Hills (Outer Himalayas) are the lowest range, with rolling hills and thick forests, joining the mountains to the plains below.

There is even a surprise hiding in the Himalayas: a cold desert called Ladakh. We usually think of deserts as hot. But a desert really means a place with very little rain. Ladakh gets almost no rain, and in winter the temperature falls below −30°C. Its rocky, bare land looks so strange that one part is nicknamed “Moonland”, because it looks like the surface of the moon.

People in the Himalayas have cleverly suited their lives to the cold. For example, in the western Himalayas they build kath-kuni houses out of local stone and wood. These houses stay warm inside and can even survive small earthquakes.

The Northern Plains

Now come down from the mountains. Just below the Himalayas is the green band in Figure 1.1 — the Northern Plains (also called the Gangetic Plains).

The word plain means flat, level land. (The opposite of a hill.) These plains are wide, flat and very, very fertile. Fertile means the soil is rich, so crops grow easily and well. (A fertile field is like good, healthy soil in a pot — plants love it.)

Why is this land so fertile? The answer is the rivers. The Ganga, Indus and Brahmaputra (born in the Himalayas) flow across these plains. Along the way, they carry tiny bits of soil and minerals and drop them on the land. Year after year, this fresh soil makes the land richer and richer. This rich river soil is perfect for farming.

Here is a quick reminder of how rivers carry and drop soil, because we will use this idea many times.

Because the soil here is so good and water is plentiful, a huge number of people live in the Northern Plains. In fact, a very large part of India’s whole population lives here. The flat land also makes it easy to build roads and railways, so people and goods can travel easily. For thousands of years, big cities and great kingdoms have grown up on these plains.

The Peninsular Plateau

Now move further south, into the large purple triangle in the middle of Figure 1.1. This is the Peninsular Plateau.

Two new words here. Let us take them one at a time.

A plateau is a piece of land that is raised up above the land around it but has a flat top. (Picture a table: its top is flat, but it stands higher than the floor. A plateau is like a giant table of land.) Figure 1.3 below is a side view of India that makes this clear — see how the plateau stands raised compared to the low plains.

A peninsula is a piece of land with water on three sides. (Picture your finger dipped into a bowl of water — water touches it on three sides, but it is still joined to your hand on the fourth.) The southern part of India is shaped like this: the Arabian Sea on the west, the Bay of Bengal on the east, and the Indian Ocean at the bottom.

So the Peninsular Plateau is a raised, flat-topped land that has sea on three sides. It is one of the oldest pieces of land in India — much older than the young Himalayas.

The plateau has mountain ranges along its two edges, like raised walls:

  • The Western Ghats run down the west side. They are taller and unbroken, like a long wall. In the monsoon, many beautiful waterfalls tumble down them.
  • The Eastern Ghats run down the east side. They are lower and broken into smaller hills.

Between these two walls lies the wide, flat Deccan Plateau.

Here is an interesting detail about the plateau’s shape. It is tilted slightly down towards the east — like a table with the legs on one side a little shorter. So most of its big rivers (the Godavari, Krishna and Mahanadi) flow east, towards the Bay of Bengal. A couple of rivers (the Narmada and Tapti) flow the other way, west, into the Arabian Sea.

The plateau is rich in two things. First, minerals — useful materials dug out of the ground, like coal and iron. (Coal is burnt to make electricity.) These minerals make the plateau very important for India’s factories and economy. Second, forests — thick forests cover parts of the plateau. Many tribal communities, such as the Santhal, Gond, Baiga and Bhil, have lived in and around these forests for a very long time, with their own languages and ways of life closely tied to nature.

This is also a good moment to mention India’s famous Jog Falls in Karnataka — a tall waterfall where a river drops over the edge of the plateau. The rushing power of such waterfalls is used to make electricity (called hydroelectricity, where hydro means water).

The Indian Desert

Move now to the west, to the small yellow patch in Figure 1.1. This is the Thar Desert, also called the Great Indian Desert.

A desert is a place that is very dry — it gets very little rain. With little rain, there is little water, and few plants can grow. The Thar is a vast, dry land of golden sand. Much of it lies in the state of Rajasthan, and it spreads a little into Gujarat, Punjab and Haryana.

The sand here is shaped into hills called sand dunes. The wind blows the loose sand and piles it up into these curved hills. Some dunes rise as high as 150 metres. Because the sand is loose and the wind keeps moving it, the dunes can slowly change their shape and even shift.

Life in the desert is hard. The days are very hot, the nights can be cold, and water is scarce. Scarce means there is very little of it, so it is precious. (Think of one bottle of water shared by a whole family for a whole day — every drop matters.)

So the people of the Thar have learned to live carefully with very little water. Women may walk long distances to fetch water. To save water, they often clean their utensils by scrubbing them with sand instead of washing them with lots of water. They have also built clever rainwater stores called taanka and kunds, which collect and save rainwater for the dry months. The way they dress, what they eat, and how they live are all suited to the heat and the lack of water.

The Coastal Plains & Islands

Now go to the very edges of the land, where India meets the sea. In Figure 1.1, these are the thin orange strips along the left and right — the Coastal Plains. India’s coastline is over 7500 kilometres long.

A coastal plain is a strip of flat land lying between the sea and the higher land behind it (the Ghats). There are two:

  • The West Coast runs from Gujarat down to Kerala, past Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. Here the Western Ghats stand close to the sea, so the coastal strip is narrow. Big port cities like Mumbai (India’s money centre) grew here.
  • The East Coast runs from the Ganga delta down to Kanyakumari at the southern tip. It is wider, with big river deltas.

What is a delta? A delta is the fan-shaped land a river builds where it meets the sea. As the river enters the sea, it slows down and drops all its soil there. Over many years, this dropped soil piles up into a wide, flat, very fertile area, shaped a bit like a triangle. The Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri and Mahanadi rivers all make rich deltas on the east coast, and the land there is excellent for farming, especially rice.

Now look further out — the green dots in the seas in Figure 1.1. These are India’s Islands. An island is a piece of land with water all around it. India has two main groups:

  • Lakshadweep — a group of small islands made of coral, in the Arabian Sea to the west. (Coral is a hard material built up over time by tiny sea creatures.)
  • The Andaman and Nicobar Islands — a larger group of islands in the Bay of Bengal to the east. These are volcanic islands. In fact, Barren Island here is India’s only active volcano. These islands sit far out in the ocean and act like watchful outposts, keeping an eye on the sea around India.

Rivers

We have met India’s rivers again and again — Ganga, Indus, Godavari, Narmada. Let us now see them all together, because rivers are the lifelines of the land. A river is a large natural stream of flowing water that travels across the land and finally empties into a sea or ocean.

Figure 1.4 shows India’s major rivers and which way they flow.

Notice two big families of rivers:

  1. The Himalayan rivers (Ganga, Indus, Brahmaputra) are fed by melting snow. So they have water all year, even in summer when the snow melts the most. They water the Northern Plains.
  2. The Peninsular rivers (like Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada) get their water mostly from rain. Because the plateau tilts east, most of them flow east into the Bay of Bengal; only a few (Narmada, Tapti) flow west.

Rivers do so much for India: they give drinking water, water the fields, carry boats and goods, and (where they tumble over waterfalls) help make electricity. No wonder so many of India’s great cities sit beside rivers.

How geography shapes life

We have now met every region. Let us bring it all together and answer the big question of this chapter: why does the shape of the land decide how people live?

It helps to picture the land rising and falling as you travel from north to south. Look back at the side view in Figure 1.3: tall cold mountains, then low flat plains, then the raised plateau, then the coast and the sea. Keep that picture in mind.

Now, two simple rules explain almost everything about where people live.

Rule 1: Flat, watered land is easy to live on — so it has the most people. On the Northern Plains, the land is flat, the soil is rich, and rivers bring plenty of water. Farming is easy. Roads and railways are easy to build. So millions of people settle there. Flat plus fertile plus water equals crowds of people and farms.

Rule 2: Hard land has few people. High mountains are cold and steep, so it is hard to farm or build there. Deserts are dry, so water is scarce. Both push people away, and few live there.

The picture in Figure 1.5 sums this up for four kinds of land.

Concept check

The Himalayas are cooler than the plains below them, even though both can be at the same latitude (same distance from the Equator). Why are the mountains cooler? Think about height.

Geography shapes more than just numbers of people. It shapes culture too — food, clothes, houses and festivals. In the cold Himalayas, houses are built thick and warm. In the hot, dry Thar, people wear light clothes and save water. On the coast, fish is a common food. The land quietly guides everything.

That is the heart of this chapter: read the land, and you can guess how people will live on it.

Almost every desert we see in films and photos is a blazing hot sandy place with the sun beating down, so the word 'desert' brings only heat to mind.

A desert really means a place with very little rain, not a hot place. So a desert can be cold too. Ladakh, high in the Himalayas, is a cold desert where winter temperatures fall below minus 30 degrees Celsius — yet it is a desert, because it gets almost no rain.

Mountains feel like the most solid, unchanging things in the world — they look exactly the same in every photo across your whole life, so it seems they were always there.

The Himalayas were formed when the Indian landmass drifted north and crashed into Asia about 50 million years ago, folding the land upward. India is still pushing north a few centimetres each year, so the Himalayas are still slowly rising even today.

We often go to hill stations like Shimla for a cool holiday, so it feels like the cool mountains must be a comfortable, crowded place to live.

Actually, few people live high in the mountains. The cold, the thin air and the steep slopes make farming and building very hard. Most people live on the flat, fertile Northern Plains, where land is easy to farm and water is plentiful.
