Why This Matters
Big numbers are all around you.
A newspaper says a city has a population of 1,24,42,373 people. A poster says a temple cost ₹50,00,00,000 to build. A fact card says the Sun is about 15,00,00,000 kilometres away.
These numbers look scary at first. So many digits, so many commas. Most people just skip over them. They read “a lot” and move on.
But these numbers carry real meaning. A lakh is very different from a crore. If you cannot tell which is bigger, you cannot understand the news, a budget, a population, or a price.
Here is a small story from the Ganita Prakash textbook. Eshwarappa is a rice farmer in Chintamani, a town in Karnataka. One day he heard that India once had about one lakh varieties of rice. His son Estu was amazed. Estu had tasted only 3 kinds of rice in his whole life. He wondered: if he ate one new variety every single day, could he taste all one lakh in a 100-year lifetime?
That is exactly the kind of question this chapter answers. By the end, you will feel how big a lakh and a crore are. You will read, write, compare and round large numbers with ease. And you will never be scared of a long number again.
The Big Idea
A large number is not one giant lump. It is built from smaller pieces, each sitting in its own place. The place of a digit decides its value. Once you know the places — ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, lakhs, crores — you can read any number, no matter how long. The commas are just helpers that group the digits so your eyes can find the places quickly. Everything else in this chapter grows from this one idea: where a digit sits is what it is worth.
Let’s Break It Down
We will go step by step. First, get a feel for how big a lakh and a crore are. Then learn the Indian place value system and its commas. Then meet the international system. Then read, write and compare large numbers. Finally, learn place value, expanded form, and rounding.
Before we start, let us quickly remember what “place value” means, because everything depends on it.
How big is a lakh? How big is a crore?
You know the places ones, tens, hundreds, thousands. Let us keep going, ten times at a time.
- Start with 1.
- Ten ones make ten: 10.
- Ten tens make a hundred: 100.
- Ten hundreds make a thousand: 1,000.
- Ten thousands make ten thousand: 10,000.
- Ten ten-thousands make 1,00,000. We call this one lakh.
So a lakh is just the next step after ten thousand. One lakh is a hundred thousands. Written out, it is 1 followed by 5 zeroes.

Now keep going past a lakh.
- Ten lakhs make 10,00,000 (ten lakh).
- Ten ten-lakhs make 1,00,00,000. We call this one crore.
So one crore is a hundred lakhs. Written out, it is 1 followed by 7 zeroes.
Here is the chain in short:
10 thousands = 1 lakh (1 followed by 5 zeroes)
100 thousands = 1 lakh (another way to say the same thing)
100 lakhs = 1 crore (1 followed by 7 zeroes)
Now, back to Estu’s question. Is one lakh really that big? Let us check his rice problem.
There are 365 days in a year (ignoring leap years). In 100 years there are 365 × 100 = 36,500 days. So even eating one new rice variety every day for 100 years, Estu could taste only about 36,500 varieties. That is far less than 1,00,000. He would not come close to a lakh!
Let’s work out exactly how short he falls.
Estu eats one new rice variety every day for 100 years (ignore leap years). How many varieties does he taste? How many short of one lakh is this?

Find the days in 100 years. One year has 365 days. So 100 years have 365 × 100 days. To multiply by 100, just add two zeroes: 365 × 100 = 36,500 days.

He tastes one variety per day, so he tastes 36,500 varieties in total.

One lakh is 1,00,000. Find how many short he is: 1,00,000 − 36,500. Line them up and subtract: 1,00,000 − 36,500 = 63,500.

So in a 100-year life, eating one new variety daily, Estu tastes only 36,500 varieties. That is 63,500 short of one lakh. A lakh is genuinely huge — it dwarfs a whole lifetime of daily tasting.
A crore is a hundred times bigger still. If a lakh already beats a lifetime of daily tasting, you can imagine how vast a crore is.
The Indian place value system and commas
Look at this number with no commas: 1278830.
It is hard to read, right? Your eyes have to count the digits one by one. This is where commas come to the rescue.
In the Indian system, we place commas to make small groups of digits. Each group sits at a known place. The rule is simple.
Starting from the right, put the first comma after 3 digits. Then put a comma after every 2 digits.
So the grouping pattern is 3, 2, 2, 2, … from the right.
For 1278830, we group like this: 12,78,830. Now it is easy. Each group has a name: the last 3 digits are the hundreds-tens-ones, the next 2 digits are the thousands, and the next 2 are the lakhs.
The chart below shows exactly where each digit of 12,78,830 sits, and where the commas fall.
The number names follow the groups. So 12,78,830 is read as twelve lakh seventy-eight thousand eight hundred thirty. You read the lakh group, then the thousand group, then the last three digits — just like reading the chart from left to right.
Let’s write a number from its name to lock this in.
Write 'Four lakh seven thousand seven hundred four' as a number in the Indian system.

Break the name into its place groups: four lakh / seven thousand / seven hundred four. Each part tells you what goes in that group.

Lakhs part: “four lakh” means 4 in the lakhs place. Thousands part: “seven thousand” means 07 in the thousands group (we need 2 digits, so write 07). Last group: “seven hundred four” means 704.

Put the groups together from the left: 4 (lakhs), then 07 (thousands), then 704. That gives the digits 4 07 704.

Add the Indian commas (3, then 2 from the right): 4,07,704. That is the answer.
In the Indian system, why is the first comma placed after 3 digits from the right, but every comma after that is placed after only 2 digits?
Because of how the place names are spaced. The first three places — ones, tens, hundreds — form one natural group of 3. After that, the named jumps come in pairs: thousand and ten-thousand make one pair of 2, then lakh and ten-lakh make the next pair of 2, then crore and ten-crore, and so on. The commas simply mark the start of each new pair, which is why the pattern is 3, then 2, 2, 2.
The international system and millions
Many other countries write large numbers in the international system (also called the American system). It uses the same digits, but groups them differently and gives them different names.
In the international system, you put a comma after every 3 digits from the right. So the grouping pattern is 3, 3, 3, … — all groups of three.
The names are: thousand, then million, then billion.
- One million = 10,00,000 in Indian = 1,000,000 in international. That is ten lakh.
- One billion = 1,00,00,00,000 in Indian = 1,000,000,000 in international. That is one hundred crore.
The key idea: the number itself does not change. Only the commas and the names change. The picture below shows the very same number written both ways.

A quick way to translate: one million = ten lakh, and one crore = ten million. The words “lakh” and “crore” come from the Sanskrit words lakṣa and koṭi. The Indian system is used in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan and other neighbours too.
Let’s read a really long number in both systems.
Read the number 9876501234 in both the Indian and the international systems.

First add Indian commas (3, then 2, 2, 2 from the right): 9,87,65,01,234. This has ten digits, so it goes past crore into hundred-crore.

Read the Indian groups from the left: 9 (hundred-crore group), 87 crore, 65 lakh, 01 thousand, 234. So it is 987 crore 65 lakh 1 thousand 234.

Now add international commas (every 3 digits from the right): 9,876,501,234. Read the groups: 9 billion, 876 million, 501 thousand, 234.

So 9876501234 is 987 crore 65 lakh 1 thousand 234 in the Indian system, and 9 billion 876 million 501 thousand 234 in the international system. Same number, two ways of saying it.
Reading, writing and comparing large numbers
You already know how to read a number once it has commas. Now let us compare two large numbers — decide which is bigger.
There is one golden rule, and it is wonderfully simple.
More digits means a bigger number. A number with more digits is always larger than a number with fewer digits. If both numbers have the same number of digits, then compare them digit by digit, starting from the left.
Why does “more digits wins” always work? Because each extra digit pushes you into a place ten times bigger. The smallest 7-digit number is 10,00,000 (ten lakh). The largest 6-digit number is 9,99,999 (under ten lakh). So every 7-digit number beats every 6-digit number. There is no overlap.
When the digit count is the same, you look from the left. The leftmost place is the most powerful, so whoever is bigger there wins, no matter what comes after.
Let’s compare two same-length numbers carefully.
Which is greater: 84,25,970 or 84,52,970?

Count the digits. Both have 7 digits (both are in the ten-lakh range). So “more digits wins” does not decide it. We must compare from the left.

Compare the leftmost digits: both start with 8, then 4. Same so far. Keep going.

Next digit: the first number has 2 (in the lakhs place), the second has 5. Here they differ. 5 is bigger than 2.

Since the second number wins at the first place where they differ, it is greater. So 84,52,970 > 84,25,970. (The digits after the difference do not matter — the lakhs place already settled it.)
Is 30 thousand bigger than 3 lakh? Explain why or why not.
No. Write them as numbers. 30 thousand = 30,000, which has 5 digits. 3 lakh = 3,00,000, which has 6 digits. The number with more digits is bigger, so 3,00,000 is much bigger. In fact 3 lakh is ten times 30 thousand. So 3 lakh > 30 thousand.
Place value and expanded form
You have met place value already. Now let us use it to write a number in expanded form.
Expanded form means writing a number as the sum of what each digit is worth. You take each digit, multiply it by its place value, and add everything up.
For example, take 5,04,085. Let’s read each digit’s worth:
- The 5 in the lakhs place is worth 5 × 1,00,000 = 5,00,000.
- The 0 in the ten-thousands place is worth 0 (it adds nothing).
- The 4 in the thousands place is worth 4 × 1,000 = 4,000.
- The 0 in the hundreds place is worth 0.
- The 8 in the tens place is worth 8 × 10 = 80.
- The 5 in the ones place is worth 5 × 1 = 5.
Add the parts that are not zero: 5,04,085 = 5,00,000 + 4,000 + 80 + 5.

Expanded form makes the meaning of a number crystal clear. It shows that a digit’s value is its face value (the digit itself) times its place value (where it sits).

Write 27,30,000 in expanded form, and say its number name.

Find each digit and its place. From the left: 2 is in ten-lakhs, 7 is in lakhs, 3 is in ten-thousands, then three zeroes in thousands, hundreds and ones… wait, let us be careful and list all places.

Write the digits with places (from the chart): 2 (ten lakh), 7 (lakh), 3 (ten thousand), 0 (thousand), 0 (hundred), 0 (ten), 0 (one). The zeroes all add nothing.

Multiply the non-zero digits by their places: 2 × 10,00,000 = 20,00,000; 7 × 1,00,000 = 7,00,000; 3 × 10,000 = 30,000.

So the expanded form is 27,30,000 = 20,00,000 + 7,00,000 + 30,000, and the number name is twenty-seven lakh thirty thousand.
Estimation and rounding
Sometimes you do not need the exact number. You just need a quick, “good enough” idea of its size.
A newspaper might say “1 lakh people visited the book fair.” The exact count might have been 99,999 or 1,02,300. But “about 1 lakh” tells the reader enough. This is estimation — replacing an exact number with a nearby round number that is easier to grasp.
Rounding is the tool we use to estimate. To round a number, you swap it for the nearest round number — the nearest thousand, the nearest lakh, the nearest crore, and so on.
How do you find the nearest one? Think of a number line.
Look at the digit you are rounding to. Find the two round numbers on either side. Your number sits somewhere between them. If it is past the halfway point, round up. If it is before the halfway point, round down.
Let us round 2,87,000 to the nearest ten thousand. The two ten-thousands around it are 2,80,000 and 2,90,000. The halfway point is 2,85,000. Since 2,87,000 is past 2,85,000, it is closer to 2,90,000. So we round up to 2,90,000.
The number line below shows exactly this.
Rounding up makes the number a little bigger than the real value; rounding down makes it a little smaller. Both are useful. A school of 732 people might order 750 sweets (rounding up, so nobody is left out). A shopkeeper who paid ₹470 might say “around ₹450” (rounding down).
Estimation also helps you check answers fast. Let us estimate a sum.
Estimate 4,63,128 + 4,19,682 by rounding each number to the nearest lakh. Is the real sum more or less than your estimate?

Round 4,63,128 to the nearest lakh. The lakhs around it are 4,00,000 and 5,00,000; halfway is 4,50,000. Since 4,63,128 is past 4,50,000, round up to 5,00,000.

Round 4,19,682 to the nearest lakh. The lakhs around it are 4,00,000 and 5,00,000; halfway is 4,50,000. Since 4,19,682 is before 4,50,000, round down to 4,00,000.

Add the rounded numbers: 5,00,000 + 4,00,000 = 9,00,000. So the sum is roughly nine lakh.

We rounded the first number up (added a bit) and the second down (removed a bit). The first was rounded up by about 37,000, the second down by about 20,000, so overall we added more than we removed. The estimate 9,00,000 is therefore a little high. The exact sum, 4,63,128 + 4,19,682 = 8,82,810, is indeed a bit less than 9,00,000. The estimate gave us the right ballpark in seconds.
When you round 6,72,85,183 to the nearest crore, why does it become 7,00,00,000 and not 6,00,00,000?
The two crores on either side are 6,00,00,000 and 7,00,00,000. The halfway point is 6,50,00,000. Our number 6,72,85,183 is past 6,50,00,000, so it is closer to 7,00,00,000. We are nearer to the higher crore, so we round up to 7,00,00,000.
Common Mistakes
These are the slip-ups students make most often with large numbers. Spotting them now will save you marks later.
A lakh and a million are the same thing, so 1 lakh = 1 million.
Both words are used for 'a big round number' in everyday talk, and people switch between them loosely, so they start to feel interchangeable.
They are different sizes. One lakh is 1,00,000 (1 with 5 zeroes). One million is 10,00,000 (1 with 6 zeroes) — that is ten lakh. So one million = ten lakh, not one lakh.
In the Indian system you put a comma after every 3 digits, just like in the international system.
The international 3-3-3 grouping is everywhere — on calculators, on websites, in many books — so the eye gets used to seeing commas after every three digits.
The Indian system groups as 3, then 2, 2, 2 from the right. The first comma comes after 3 digits, but after that the commas come after every 2 digits. So it is 12,78,830 in Indian, not 1,278,830.
A number with more digits could still be smaller if its first digit is small, so 9,999 might be bigger than 10,000.
A row of 9s looks large and impressive, while 10,000 starts with a small 1, so it feels smaller at a glance.
More digits always wins. 9,999 has 4 digits; 10,000 has 5 digits. Any 5-digit number is bigger than any 4-digit number, because the extra place is ten times larger. So 10,000 > 9,999.
To round 2,87,000 to the nearest ten thousand, just drop the smaller digits to get 2,80,000.
Dropping or zeroing the trailing digits feels like the natural 'cut it short' move, and it does give a round number, so it seems right.
Rounding is about which round number is nearest, not about chopping. 2,87,000 is past the halfway mark 2,85,000, so it is closer to 2,90,000. The nearest ten thousand is 2,90,000, not 2,80,000.

Write 'One crore one lakh one thousand ten' as a number in the Indian system, then say how many digits it has.
Take it group by group from the largest:
- One crore = 1 in the crore place.
- One lakh = 01 in the lakhs group.
- One thousand = 01 in the thousands group.
- Ten = 010 in the last group.
Lay out the digits from the left: 1 (crore), 01 (lakh), 01 (thousand), 010 (ones group).
That gives 1 01 01 010. Now add Indian commas (3, then 2, 2 from the right):
1,01,01,010.
Counting the digits: 1-0-1-0-1-0-1-0, that is 8 digits.
Read 4050678 in Indian place value notation, then write its number name in both the Indian and the international systems.
Add Indian commas (3, then 2, 2 from the right): 40,50,678.
Indian name: read the groups — 40 lakh, 50 thousand, 678. So it is forty lakh fifty thousand six hundred seventy-eight.
Now add international commas (every 3 from the right): 4,050,678.
International name: 4 million, 050 thousand, 678. So it is four million fifty thousand six hundred seventy-eight.
(Notice the number is the same; only the grouping and names change.)
Estimate 14,63,128 − 4,90,020 by rounding each number to the nearest lakh. Then find the exact answer and compare.
Round each to the nearest lakh.
14,63,128: the lakhs around it are 14,00,000 and 15,00,000; halfway is 14,50,000. Since 14,63,128 is past halfway, round up to 15,00,000.
4,90,020: the lakhs around it are 4,00,000 and 5,00,000; halfway is 4,50,000. Since 4,90,020 is past halfway, round up to 5,00,000.
Estimated difference: 15,00,000 − 5,00,000 = 10,00,000 (about ten lakh).
Exact answer: 14,63,128 − 4,90,020 = 9,73,108.
Compare: the exact answer 9,73,108 is a little less than the estimate 10,00,000, but very close. The estimate gave a fast, sensible check.
Challenge
A number rounds to 5,00,00,000 whether you round it to the nearest thousand, nearest ten thousand, nearest lakh, nearest ten lakh, or nearest crore — all five give 5,00,00,000. Give one number that works, and explain why it works.
We need a number so close to 5,00,00,000 that every level of rounding lands back on 5,00,00,000.
Try 5,00,00,000 itself. Round it to the nearest thousand: it is already an exact thousand, so it stays 5,00,00,000. The same is true for ten thousand, lakh, ten lakh and crore — it is already exactly all of those. So all five nearest neighbours are 5,00,00,000. It works.
Now think about numbers close by, like 4,99,99,500. To the nearest thousand it rounds to 5,00,00,000 (it is past the halfway 4,99,99,500… actually it sits exactly at the halfway, so it rounds up to 5,00,00,000). To the nearest ten thousand, lakh, ten lakh and crore it also rounds up to 5,00,00,000, because it is just below the round figure. So this works too.
The key idea: any number within half a thousand of 5,00,00,000 (from about 4,99,99,500 up to 5,00,00,500) will round to 5,00,00,000 at the nearest thousand — and being that close, it also rounds to 5,00,00,000 at every bigger level. There are many such numbers, not just one. The simplest correct answer is 5,00,00,000.
Estu says: 'If 1 lakh people stood shoulder to shoulder in a line, they would stretch about 38 kilometres.' Using this, roughly how long a line would 1 crore people make? Give your answer in kilometres.
First, how many lakhs are in a crore? One crore = 100 lakhs. So 1 crore people is 100 times as many as 1 lakh people.
If 1 lakh people make a line about 38 km long, then 100 lakhs make a line about 100 times as long.
Multiply: 38 × 100 = 3,800 km.
So 1 crore people, shoulder to shoulder, would stretch roughly 3,800 kilometres — longer than the distance from Kashmir to Kanyakumari! This is a good way to feel how much bigger a crore is than a lakh: a hundred times bigger.
